How to Measure Your Dog for a Sherwani or Lehenga: Complete Pet Size Guide

One of the most common questions we get at Petaloons is: "How do I know which size to order for my dog?" Getting the right size is the single most important factor in making sure your dog's sherwani or lehenga looks stunning and feels comfortable. This guide walks you through the entire process.

The Three Key Measurements

All dog clothing — from a dog sherwani to a dog lehenga — is sized based on three body measurements:

1. Neck Circumference

Wrap a soft measuring tape around the base of your dog's neck, where the collar normally sits. Add 1–2 cm for comfort. This ensures the collar area of the outfit isn't too tight.

2. Chest Girth

This is the most important measurement. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your dog's chest — typically just behind the front legs. This measurement determines which size band your dog falls into.

3. Back Length

Measure along your dog's back from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. For a dog sherwani, a slightly longer back length looks more elegant. For a dog lehenga, the length determines how flared the skirt will be.

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Always measure with a soft cloth tape, not a rigid ruler
  • Measure your dog while standing, not sitting or lying down
  • Add 1 inch to chest measurement for comfort breathing room
  • If your dog is between two sizes, always go up a size
  • For breeds with a barrel chest (Bulldogs, Pugs), prioritise the chest measurement above all else
  • Puppies grow fast — if ordering for a puppy, size up by one

Breed-Specific Sizing Tips

Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso

These breeds have a wide chest relative to their size. Usually fit best in S or M even if they look small.

Dachshunds

Long back, short legs. For a dog sherwani, measure back length carefully. Usually size XS–S.

Indian Breeds (Indie Dogs)

Indie dogs have athletic, lean builds. Use the chest measurement as your primary guide. Usually M–XL.

Labrador Retrievers

India's most popular dog breed. Most adult Labradors fit XL or 2XL in our sherwanis and lehengas.
