10 Pro Tips for Photographing Your Dog in Ethnic Wear
Share
Your dog looks incredible in that sherwani. Now let’s make sure the photos do justice to the moment.
Photographing dogs in ethnic wear is both an art and a practice. The outfit is only as good as the photo you capture. These 10 tips will help you get consistently beautiful shots of your Petaloons-dressed dog — whether you’re using a DSLR or just your phone.
1. 🌅 Shoot in Golden Hour Light
The best dog photos happen in the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. This “golden hour” light is warm, soft, and directional — it makes brocade embroidery glow and makes your dog’s fur look beautiful. Avoid harsh midday sun which creates unflattering shadows and washes out fabric colours.
2. 📱 Use Portrait Mode on Your Phone
Portrait mode (available on all modern smartphones) blurs the background and keeps your dog sharp — exactly what you want when the outfit is the hero. The outfit details pop when the background is softly blurred. On iPhone, use Portrait mode. On Android, use the Bokeh or Aperture mode.
3. 👀 Get at Eye Level with Your Dog

The biggest mistake in dog photography: shooting from standing height. Always kneel, crouch, or even lie on the floor to get at your dog’s eye level. This creates an intimate, compelling portrait rather than a top-down snapshot. It also shows the full outfit from the front — exactly how it was designed to be seen. |
4. 🎖️ Use a Clean, Simple Background
Let the outfit be the star. Avoid busy, cluttered backgrounds. The best backgrounds for ethnic dog outfits: plain white or cream walls, floral arches, draped fabric, velvet backdrops, or lush green monsoon foliage. Avoid busy wallpaper, patterned floor tiles, or areas with visible furniture.
5. 🍪 Use High-Value Treats for Eye Contact
The secret to getting your dog to look at the camera: hold a treat directly above the camera lens. Your dog will stare straight at the treat — which looks exactly like they’re looking directly into the camera. Use a high-value treat (chicken, cheese, peanut butter) that your dog doesn’t get regularly, so their attention is fully captured.
6. 📸 Burst Mode is Your Best Friend
Dogs move constantly. Instead of taking single shots and hoping, use burst mode (hold down the shutter button on your phone) to take 10–20 shots in quick succession. You’ll capture at least 2–3 perfect frames in every burst. Sort through them after the session rather than during it — you’ll get better shots and stress less.
7. 😴 Tire Them Out Before the Shoot
A dog that has just had a 20-minute walk or play session is much calmer and more cooperative during a photoshoot. Schedule your outfit photos after exercise, not before. A tired dog holds poses longer and is less likely to shake off the outfit or run away from the camera.
8. ⭕ Focus on the Eyes
In any portrait — human or dog — the eyes must be sharp. On your phone, tap on your dog’s eye on the screen before shooting to set the focus point. Sharp eyes with a slightly soft background is the formula for a beautiful pet portrait, regardless of what outfit they’re wearing.
9. 🎨 Edit for Warmth, Not Filter
Ethnic outfits look best with warm-toned editing. Slightly increase warmth and saturation in your editing app to make brocade golds and rich reds pop. Avoid cool-toned or heavily filtered edits — they flatten fabric colours. Apps like Lightroom Mobile (free) give you precise control.
10. 🐶 Know When to Stop
If your dog is showing signs of stress — excessive panting, trying to remove the outfit, or sitting down and refusing to move — end the session immediately. The best photos come from happy, relaxed dogs. A 10-minute session with a happy dog beats a 40-minute session with a stressed one. Their comfort always comes first.
